Really glad to hear about the grant and the other good news, Lydia. After going though so much, you deserve easier times!

Also, I'd love to discuss what you've learned in these years about trust, judging character, and in what kinds of communities and ideologies people are help to good/bad standards, where people tend to grow in integrity and where not, when people make up for each other's blind spots and when not, what blocks people from being better judges of character, and so on.

Seems like you've had lots of experience on many levels relevant to this. I talked to Mark E about what he'd learned in these areas a few years ago and learned a lot myself.

Thank you, Joe :) and yes, you won’t be surprised to know that I consider the questions you are asking some of the most urgent of our time. You might find this recent post of mine interesting if you haven’t already seen it - I want to write more about these topics but they are so big, I feel like I have to take the problem in small pieces: https://lydialaurenson.substack.com/p/social-contracts-moral-order-weaving

Interesting. I didn't know SFF supported this kind of work?

I think they generally haven’t in the past? The sense I got during my application process is that the Speculation Grant is supporting this project in part because they think it’s important for understanding the AI community.

In general, I am observing/hopeful that EA has lately been becoming more open to supporting alternative media.

(edited to correct a couple words, including the name of the Speculation Grant, which I accidentally called the Speculation Fund)

I’m looking forward to reading it even though I had never heard of Leverage until reading this article.

And yes, journalism has changed, and not for the better.

Lydia Laurenson's avatar

I will be curious about reactions both from people who have never heard of Leverage and people who have!

I remember reading about Leverage Research 1.0 on LessWrong...

There is definitely a lot of speculation about Leverage 1.0 on LessWrong!

While it’s tempting to research it a bit I’ve decided not to, so I can read your upcoming article free of preconceived notions.

Incidentally, there's a big recent book about historically-attested cases of levitation: *They Flew: A History of the Impossible* by Carlos Eire of Yale. The book raises fundamental questions of historical method and epistemology. Needless to say, the anti-woo establishment rejects it out of hand as complete bunk.

Should we start a social club and support network for fellow minor public figures?

A buddy of mine suggested a microcelebrity dating network

Ha! Even better.

Since you asked for copy editing observations in your end notes: in the phrase “Extremely Online poaster”, the last word should probably be “poster” unless there’s a specific meme I don’t know about
